The worldwide PC sales degenerate during the third quarter of the year, marking the sixth consecutive period of falls.<\/p>\n

According to new figures from Gartner, the so-called “back-to-school” quarter saw an 8.6 per cent contraction from the same period of 2012, as consumers increasingly favour new and exciting technology including Smartphone\u2019s and laptops for their web-browsing needs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mikako Kitagawa, principal analyst at Gartner, said: “Consumers’ shift from PCs to tablets for daily content consumption continued to decrease the installed base of PCs both in mature as well as in emerging markets.<\/p>\n

\"custom<\/a>“A greater availability of inexpensive Android tablets attracted first-time consumers in emerging markets and as supplementary devices in mature markets.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Gartner, technology giants HP and Lenovo are in direct competition<\/a> for the top global position in the PC market, while the upcoming festive period is expected to be an important time for the rival firms.
\nThe market analyst said weakness in the Chinese market continued to affect growth for Lenovo. However, developing regions – such as South America – helped the firm to increase its overall presence.<\/p>\n

During the third quarter of the year, some 16.1 million personal computers were shipped in the US, representing a 3.5 per cent rise from the same period of last year.<\/p>\n

Ms Kitagawa said:<\/strong> “The shrinking installed base of PCs has also passed the steepest decline phase because the structural change has progressed fairly quickly.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Tablets will continue to impact the PC market, but the US PC market will see a more moderate decrease rather than a steep decline in the next two years.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
